About me

Hi! I’m Sophia, the woman behind the flowers. This past year was my first year growing flowers as a hobby and I realized I could build this business and stay home with my two boys. And so, here I am! Growing flowers on the land my great-grandfather purchased! I never thought I’d end up here, living on the Eastern Shore where I was born and raised. I graduated from Towson University, married my husband, became a Realtor, bought my house, had a baby, sold my house, lived in a travel trailer, and had another baby all in the last 8 years. Now, I get to play in the same dirt that I played in when I was a child! It's wildly fufilling and theraputic. I can't wait to share my blooms with my community!

The History of our Farm

Singletree Farm and Ranch is a family farm nestled on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Our farm is in lovely, rural Queen Anne’s County, located outside the small, single-stoplight town of Sudlersville. The town is known for being the hometown of Baseball Hall of Famer, Jimmy Foxx.

Singletree Farm has been in our family for generations. I’m lucky to have family members that have worked in some way in agriculture all their adult lives. I’m grateful for the support I’ve been given by my family as I started my journey in flower farming, a large leap from my Bachelors in English. The land I use for my flower operation is not mine; it belongs to my father and my uncle. My great grandparents bought this land and it’s been in the family ever since. My family created an LLC for the farm in recent years, and so Singletree Farm and Ranch was born.

The name was taken from a previous venture as a shooting clay range in the 1990s. The range had an indoor space for patrons which has been used for family crab feasts, reunions and New Years Eve parties for as long as I’ve been alive. We’ve recently put up a sign outside it’s door as part of the few minor renovations to the space. I hope to have this space, called The Clubhouse, updated in time to host a few workshops in the fall of this year!

Singletree Farm and Ranch is the home of Singletree Farm and Florals, although they are two separate businesses. There’s a new sign at the end of our lane and it makes me so happy to be involved in updating the farm, even in small ways. My father tells us stories of his childhood and young adulthood raising and training racehorses for his dad. The racetrack remains, although grass has overtaken much of it. Now, we grow seasonal flowers and create a small slice of floral heaven for myself, my two children, my community and the pollinators.

What is a Singletree?
A lone tree? Nope. It’s a bar attached at the center of the hitch on a wagon, carriage or plow, which is hooked at either end to the traces of the horse harness. The function is to balance the weight being pulled. We still have an old singletree hanging on the wall in The Clubhouse.
